The Unicorn vs the Dragon

Several years later, the unicorn and the woman were on one of their daily rides, enjoying the peace and joy of the morning.  Suddenly they saw a billow of fire far above them in the sky.  It seemed to be coming from a clearing that was just ahead of them.  The woman dismounted from the unicorn, and patted her neck gently, asking her to stay where she was.

She stepped into the clearing to investigate the fireball, when she found herself confronted by a large brown dragon with amethyst eyes.  Smoke crept  lazily out of the dragon's nostrils at it lifted its head to look at the woman.  She started to back away, but was not quick enough before she was bathed with a torrent of fire.

The unicorn heard the woman scream, so she peered out from between the trees to see what happened.  She caught sight of the dragon rising out of the clearing carrying the charred body of her mistress.  The unicorn fled into the trees hoping to escape the dragon's notice.

Then the unicorn wondered what was to become of her as she shed tears for her beloved mistress.  She knew it was useless to go back to the now empty farm.  She had not seen any other unicorns in these parts, so she suspected she was the last one.

She was interrupted from her musings by a quiet snort.  It was a beautiful stallion with a shimmering white coat.  He had a long sapphire main and a shining blue horn.  Enraptured by his beauty, she shyly approached him.  He nickered gently and then started to nuzzle her neck.  Words were unnecessary as the two unicorns greeted each other.

Then the stallion walked quietly away into the forest.  He looked back at her and whinnied, waiting for her to follow.  She stepped timidly behind and they began to move on.

Before long they came to a sparkling lake, with a herd of unicorns gathered along the beach.  The stallion nickered  and the herd raised their heads.  As he walked among them, the other unicorns opened a path for him to pass through.  All of them lowered their horns, touching the tips to the ground in deferenceto him.

In a not too far off cave there was a bright red dragon egg.  The mother dragon lovingly cared for it until it was ready to hatch.  Once hatched the mother dragon spent a lot of time hunting in order to make sure the new little dragonette had plenty of fresh meat.  The dragonette longed to leave the cave and play in the beautiful sunlight, but her mother told her she was way too young.

One day while her mother was out hunting, the little dragonette snuck quietly out of the cave.  She saw a beautiful forest and decided to romp through the trees.

Before she knew it, the poor little dragonette lost her way.  She tried to fly up above the treetops to get her bearings, but, alas, her wings were not yet strong enough to lift her more than a couple of feet.

As night began to fall the dragonette spied a cave in the distance.  Thinking this must be her cave the dragonette made directly for it with all haste.  When she entered she saw four sets of glowing yellow eyes peering at her through the darkness, and she heard a deep rumbling growl.  Grrrrr

The dragonette started shaking nervously and began to spout fire.  She heard a surprised yelp and saw 4 little  panther cubs by the light of her flame.  Realizing that this was not her own cozy cave, the dragonette quietly left.

As she came outside she picked up the scent of her own trail.  She decided to follow it back the way she had come.  Before long she found her own cave and went inside.  She was glad to find that her mother had not yet returned, because she did not want to get into trouble.  The dragonette warmed up a rock with her flame, then she curled up on top of it and went to sleep.

Once upon a time there was a red unicorn foal.  She was pink with red hair.  She had gold hooves and a golden horn.  She had the sky tattooed on her legs in purple.

She loved to run with her mother through the fields.  She made sure to stay close to avoid predators.  She knew baby unicorns were considered tasty forsels by many a tiger or a lion.  She usually knew when a predator was nearby because she would catch their scent.

One day while her mother was asleep in the flowers, the baby unicorn went off to prance around the lake.  When she returned, her mother was missing.  She looked around nervously when she caught sight of a pack of coyotes escaping into the forest carrying a pink unicorn horn.

She started to persue the coyotes when suddenly someone threw a net over her.  She started to run, but the net tangled in her feet and she fell to the ground.  When she looked up, she saw a beautiful woman approaching her.

The woman reached out her hand cautiously and petted the unicorn on her snout.  Carefully she placed a rope around her neck and removed the net.  The baby unicorn pawed the ground with her golden hooves and snorted fiercely.

The woman calmed the baby unicorn with her soothing voice and patiently led her to a nearby farm.  The baby unicorn had never before dared to venture this closely to humans.

The baby unicorn grew to love the farm.  The woman was always kind and loving to her, almost as if the baby unicorn was her own child.

When the unicorn grew big enough, the worman started to ride her.  They would go on long runs together through the fields and forests.  They enjoyed frolicking together in the beautiful, untamed country.

I decided that a good bonding activity with my 10-year old Alexis would be to write something together.  She wanted to write a story.  Since I hadn't written any stories since I was in high school, I told her that she could tell me the story and I would write it down.  I must admit that I did embellish her dictation a little bit, but the events and the characters are all hers.
