The Unicorn vs the Dragon

Several years later, the unicorn and the woman were on one of their daily rides, enjoying the peace and joy of the morning.  Suddenly they saw a billow of fire far above them in the sky.  It seemed to be coming from a clearing that was just ahead of them.  The woman dismounted from the unicorn, and patted her neck gently, asking her to stay where she was.

She stepped into the clearing to investigate the fireball, when she found herself confronted by a large brown dragon with amethyst eyes.  Smoke crept  lazily out of the dragon's nostrils at it lifted its head to look at the woman.  She started to back away, but was not quick enough before she was bathed with a torrent of fire.

The unicorn heard the woman scream, so she peered out from between the trees to see what happened.  She caught sight of the dragon rising out of the clearing carrying the charred body of her mistress.  The unicorn fled into the trees hoping to escape the dragon's notice.

Then the unicorn wondered what was to become of her as she shed tears for her beloved mistress.  She knew it was useless to go back to the now empty farm.  She had not seen any other unicorns in these parts, so she suspected she was the last one.

She was interrupted from her musings by a quiet snort.  It was a beautiful stallion with a shimmering white coat.  He had a long sapphire main and a shining blue horn.  Enraptured by his beauty, she shyly approached him.  He nickered gently and then started to nuzzle her neck.  Words were unnecessary as the two unicorns greeted each other.

Then the stallion walked quietly away into the forest.  He looked back at her and whinnied, waiting for her to follow.  She stepped timidly behind and they began to move on.

Before long they came to a sparkling lake, with a herd of unicorns gathered along the beach.  The stallion nickered  and the herd raised their heads.  As he walked among them, the other unicorns opened a path for him to pass through.  All of them lowered their horns, touching the tips to the ground in deferenceto him.
